Lighting Charcoal Grills

There are several ways to light a charcoal grill. On the one hand, the fuel can be ignited directly. For this charcoal or briquettes are piled up in a pyramid. Subsequently, three solid paraffin-based igniters per 0.5 kg or of compressed wood fiber pieces are added and ignited. Alternatively, liquid grill lighters of dearomatized kerosene oil or gel concentrates of pure N-paraffin are applied to three to four passages of walnut size and ignited.  An inexpensive option is the use of egg cartons: separate the individual trays, place some below the fuel and light. Gasoline or spirits are taboo when barbecuing, because they can produce dangerous jet flames!  We recommend that you use LANDMANN's specially environmentally friendly wax-impregnated wool. 

Charcoal starter

An almost ideal option for firing the fire indirectly and, above all, quickly is to light the charcoal starter.  On a refractory base, the charcoal grate or the fire bowl, a priming cube is lit singly or together with crumpled newspaper. The required amount of coal enters the ignition chimney, and the cylinder, which is open at the bottom, is then simply placed over the flames: the warm air rises, the negative pressure is compensated by inflowing air. The fire then gets hotter, more oxygen is added, which intensifies the flames. 

Wood for your smoker.

When buying firewood for your smoker, make sure you purchase a good quality wood, because it is a question of preparing food. Ideal are untreated logs, which have been stored dry for two to three years, about 25 to 30 cm long and weighing about ½ kg. each. A log like that is sufficient to fire the smoker for about an hour.  Not every kind of wood is suitable for smoking and grilling. With oak wood, no bark should be left on the wood, otherwise tannic acids may form when burning. Please do not use any oily, fresh or coniferous woods. Glued, rotten and construction timber should be absolutely avoided.  Ignite the wood quickly and safely in five steps  1.Spread LANDMANN Lighting Wool on the charcoal grid

5.Due to the long cooking times, you should regularly check the combustion level in the firebox to avoid temperature fluctuations in the smoker 

Pre-heating Charcoal Grill

How long does charcoal have to pre-heat? What happens if you do not heat it long enough?  With an igniting fireplace, it takes about 15 to 20 minutes for the coal to be thoroughly annealed. Fuels need a little longer. If charcoal or briquettes are covered with an ash layer, the fun of barbecuing can begin. Too short to heat up can lead to the fuel not burning completely and insufficiently releasing the required heat. 

Handling your barbecue

When handling your barbecue form lighting lifting the lid, you want to be on the safe side and use glove. Charcoal vs Charcoal Briquettes: Characteristics and Differences

Charcoal and charcoal briquettes are easier to obtain and hand than natural wood. Pay attention to quality, so that in this important start phase, everything is fast and easy. The burning behavior of charcoal and charcoal briquettes varies. Charcoal can be quickly ignited, but the temperature lasts less long. Therefore, it is particularly suitable for direct barbecue. Grill briquettes take a longer time to go through. The temperature lasts longer. They are therefore used mainly for indirect grilling and smoking. In order to allow a fast annealing with a long burning time, grilled briquettes can also be mixed with charcoal to combine the benefits of both. 

Grill grate: protection and care

When stored outdoors, it can happen that, as a result of wind and weather, rust stains form on the grill grate. To remove the rust, the grill grate could be wrapped completely airtightly in aluminum foil. Then the grill must be hung above the embers for about 10 minutes. After it has cooled down, the foil can be removed. The rusty spots should now have disappeared. 

Pyrolysis – Simple cleaning with the help of heat

With gas grills, after removing the coarsest incrustations, bring the empty grill back up to maximum temperature again with the lid closed for 10 to 15 minutes. Any remaining ashes can be easily removed with a brass brush - never with a steel brush. Experts speak of pyrolysis in this context. Clean your grill grates

Chromed steel, stainless steel or enamel grills can be easily cleaned with a grill cleaner and a grill brush with brass or soft stainless-steel bristles. Cast iron grates, on the other hand, should only be cleaned with the pyrolysis self-cleaning of the grill. Strong heating of the grill then ensures that any remaining residues on the grill or in the interior are burnt. Afterwards the residues can be easily removed with a triangular metal brush.
